What is actually in it
The active ingredient is PCSO-524, a lipid extract of the green-lipped mussel, farmed in the Marlborough Sounds at the top of New Zealand's South Island. It carries about 30 free fatty acids, including EPA, DHA, ETA and OTA, and the oil is drawn out with carbon dioxide under pressure rather than a chemical solvent.
Heat is what makes this difficult. The mussels are crushed shell and all with no heat applied at any point, because heat destroys the marine lipids the whole process exists to capture. It is the reason a plate of steamed mussels contains none of them.
The extract is suspended in extra virgin olive oil with d-alpha tocopherol, which is vitamin E, then formulated and bottled in Fort Lauderdale by Great HealthWorks. From there it comes here, to a pharmacy.

How long does a bottle last?
A serving is two soft gels and there are thirty servings in a bottle, so a bottle is a month at the serving size on the label. Your pharmacist can tell you how that fits with anything else you already take.
Is this a fish oil?
No. Fish oil is pressed from fish. This is a lipid extract of a shellfish, the New Zealand green-lipped mussel, and the fatty acid profile is not the same. If you have a shellfish allergy, that is the first thing to raise at the pharmacy counter.
Why does it cost what it does?

Does Omega XL work for joint pain?
Omega XL is not a treatment for joint pain or arthritis, and we do not sell it as one. Pain, swelling or stiffness that will not settle needs a doctor. Who should not take Omega XL?
It is made from a shellfish, so anyone with a shellfish allergy should speak to a doctor before taking it. If you take a blood thinner, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have surgery coming up, ask your doctor or pharmacist first.
Can I take Omega XL with a blood thinner or other medicine?
Ask before you combine them. If you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, Eliquis or Xarelto, or any regular medicine, your doctor or pharmacist should check it first. They know what interacts with what.
Is Omega XL the same as cod liver oil?
No. Cod liver oil comes from the liver of a fish and carries vitamins A and D as well as omega-3. Omega XL is a lipid extract of a shellfish, the New Zealand green-lipped mussel, with about 30 free fatty acids. If you already take cod liver oil, tell your pharmacist before you add Omega XL.
How many Omega XL soft gels should I take a day?
Two, which is the serving on the label, and a bottle holds thirty servings. Follow the label, and ask your pharmacist if you take other supplements too.
Do I need a prescription?
No. Omega XL is sold over the counter at pharmacies across Trinidad and Tobago. Ask the pharmacist whether it suits you while you are there.
Is Omega XL FDA approved?
No supplement is. The US Food and Drug Administration does not approve supplements of any brand before they go on sale. Omega XL is formulated and bottled in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, by Great HealthWorks, from an extract made under patent licence in New Zealand.
