Vitamin XL bottle

The one everybody assumes they have covered

Living eleven degrees north of the equator makes that assumption feel reasonable. It often is not. Sustaining healthy blood levels of vitamin D takes more direct sun on more skin than most working days allow, and office hours, air conditioning and sunscreen all sit between you and it.

D3, cholecalciferol, is the form skin makes for itself, and it is the more absorbable of the two forms sold. Vitamin XL delivers it at 125 mcg, which is 5,000 IU, in one soft gel. Part of what it does there is help your body absorb the calcium that bone is built from, which is why bone health and vitamin D are always discussed together.

Bone health, immune function and brain health are all on the label and all three are claims about a normally working body. Note also that 5,000 IU is a real dose, so this is one to raise at the counter if you already take a multivitamin or anything else carrying vitamin D.

Questions about Vitamin XL

Is 5,000 IU a lot?

It is a meaningful dose rather than a token one, which is the reason to mention it to your pharmacist, particularly if you already take a multivitamin, a calcium supplement or anything else with vitamin D in it. They will tell you whether it suits you.

What is the difference between D2 and D3?

D2 comes from plant and fungal sources. D3, cholecalciferol, is the form your own skin makes in sunlight and the more absorbable of the two. This is D3.

Should I take it with food?

Vitamin D is fat soluble, so it is generally taken with a meal. Follow the label and ask at the counter if you are unsure.

Where can I buy it in Trinidad and Tobago?

At a pharmacy, not from us. Open Find a Pharmacy, pick your region or type your town, and you will get an address, and a phone number where we have one. Ring before you drive, because stock moves and no pharmacy holds every product all the time.

How much does it cost?

That is up to the pharmacy. We supply them, we do not price for them, and the same bottle can differ by a good margin between two shops in the same town. The pharmacy you call will quote you on the spot.
